Film Update: Driving Me Insane
November 26, 2006

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong.

The start of the short film is just plainly wrong. I really don't know what exactly it is that's making the whole sequence suffer, just that as stuff is arranged right now, the images don't flow together well enough to set the stage for what comes next.

I've had several friends through to take a look at the rough cut of the movie. Today the composer stopped by to see how everything cut together and to begin working out his score for the piece. (It's going to be cool.) He's the latest to like the movie and to remark on the quality of the acting, the cinematography, the direction and the writing, but even he says that there is still a bit, right at the beginning, that doesn't make sense, something visual that doesn't express well enough what is occurred on the page.

Like a writing problem, this is a conceptual knot that I can't consciously reason out. It's an intuitive jump, one that the back of my mind is taking its own sweet time in making.

Yo! Dudes in the Dark back-brain! Work faster!! I've got a totally arbitrary and self-imposed deadline to keep here!

I swear the subconscious is a bunch of slackers.

That's Better [Ummm...not really]
October 05, 2006

After much adieu, I finally got all of the footage re-imported to my machine. Thanks to the new Core 2 Duo processor and graphics card, my iMac sucked the HDV footage right up. Now, I've got to see if I can re-link everything in the old project files to the re-imported footage or start that part over from scratch too. I've got to get a draft of this short done. It's been hanging over my head for too long.

Update 10/6/09:
Frack. Footage re-imported fine, but the auto-detect of time code breaks works out differently between DV and HDV project settings. (Different device controllers and compression codecs?) I'm going to have to use the DV breaks as a guide to label the HDV footage -- all done by hand. That's going to take time. I dunno if I'm going to get my new draft of Tell Me done by Halloween. Motherfracker.

London Bomb Blast
July 07, 2005

One of my best friends is in London, visiting his family. I'm trying to reach his partner, in Australia, to see if he's alright.

Saying "Fuck al-Quaida," just isn't enough.

Updated: Crap. I've also got three friends from my MFA program that are supposedly in London right about now. I doubt any of these people have been hurt, but still. I'm a worry-wort.

Updated 2: Everyone is fine. One batch of friends left the night before, another was already home in Australia when the blasts hit. Yeah. Now, all we have to do is catch the bad-guys.

I get for the thousandth time that it was eye opening for you, as a straight actorto make out with another straight actor for an upcoming film. Of course you, like many, many other actors, had no real problem with the scene, thought it was great and owed it to your fans.

Yada, yada.

Come back after you do the full on, man-on-man, simulated sex scene and talk about how great and easy it was. Then, I might be impressed.

Our kids need no "Refuge"
June 11, 2005

Following up, I wonder what part of Tenn. licensing are they're chartering this program out of? I just did a quick search for state regulations regarding psychological treatment. They state

...that all who practice professional counseling, marital and family therapy, and clinical pastoral therapy within this state be qualified.
We all know LIA isn't qualified, but anyone know if this "Refuse" program is even licensed?

Family Values and Fear

So what happens when a young gay kid tells his parents he's gay? They ship him off to a reducation camp:

Well today, my mother, father, and I had a very long "talk" in my room where they let me know I am to apply for a fundamentalist christian program for gays. They tell me that there is something psychologically wrong with me, and they "raised me wrong." I'm a big screw up to them, who isn't on the path God wants me to be on. So I'm sitting here in tears, joing the rest of those kids who complain about their parents on blogs - and I can't help it.

This "Love in Action" camp is evil, vile and wrong. The people who run it are evil, vile, and wrong. What they do to this kid and the others forced to be there? Evil, vile and wrong.

This simple horror is not going unnoticed. this group has actually formed because of this young man's blog. They've even garnered a TV story.

Bang a drum, folks. Give this story as big a view as possible for Zach stuck in the camp, those forced to be there with him, and all the other young people just like them we hear nothing about.

Whitman-Walker to End AIDS Service in Suburbs

The Whitman-Walker Clinic will pull out of the Northern Virginia and Maryland suburbs, lay off nearly one-fourth of its staff of 260 and reduce, consolidate or end a host of other programs to stabilize the organization's finances and future.
Wow. Things have changed. My first professional jobs were with Whitman-Walker of Northern Virginia. I started as an intern, went on to help create a AIDS education program for teens and young adults, and ended up doing grief work and death and dying counseling when I got my Masters.

Here's a toast to Bob and Jay and Vinnie and Karen and all the other dedicated souls who worked tirelessly during the darkest times of the early 90s. They made such an impression on me as well as taught me attitudes and skills I still use today. Love you guys.

I know the battle isn't won. But part of why it's changing is because of what we did.

On The Horizon...

Another Witch [fag] Hunt is brewing

The church considers gay relationships "intrinsically disordered." "The Rev. James Martin of the Jesuit magazine America says four Vatican sources had told him that, under John Paul, the Vatican was about to issue a decree placing severe restrictions or an outright ban on seminarians who acknowledge they are gay - even if they are celibate."
Apparently, Pope Ratzinger is going to shift the blame away from management, authoritarianism and pedophiles and to gays. Nothing new about this, of course. They've been blaming homosexuality for all of their problems well, since the inception of their superstition.

In any event, this will all prove interesting. I'm going to go pop some popcorn and watch how this all plays out.

Living In Today
May 01, 2005

...An astronomically overwhelming majority of the people who could be born never will be. You are one of the tiny minority whose number came up. Be thankful that you have a life, and forsake your vain and presumptuous desire for a second one.

The world would be a better place if we all had this positive attitude to life. It would also be a better place if morality was all about doing good to others and refraining from hurting them, rather than religion's morbid obsession with private sin and the evils of sexual enjoyment.

City Councilman: 'Ban Nude Artwork in Public!'

Moulton said he appreciates art, but believes it should be displayed in certain places. "I see nothing wrong with that kind of art, but there should be a place for it," Moulton said. "A mother walking her kids in a stroller shouldn't be exposed to it. If we don't do something, what's the next step? How far do we let this go?"
Sources close to Rep. Moulton have revealed to NW that should this bill pass, Moulton will next move for blindfolds to be issued to all nursing newborns, lest they be permanently scarred by seeing a bare tit while suckling.

Can I get some cheese on those MachoNachos?

MachoNacho writing at RedState.Org, pretzels non-existant logic into a case that Secular Humanism glorifies Islam.

In Europe.

I think.

Bad reasoning is so terribly hard to follow.

He says:

It is shocking that Secular Humanist Europe has shunned Christianity in favor of Islam. Whatever may fairly be said about Muslims, they certainly cannot be accused of being less zealous in their belief or their dedication to their God, or their system of faith than Christians.

Let's be frank. When it comes to good old fashioned zealotry, and willingness to suffer for a belief in a higher being, ninety-nine out of one hundred Muslims have the average Christian whipped.

If you are a Christian, and reading the above quotes from Humanists who equate your faith in God with belief in fairies raised your hackles, can you imagine the hay someone like al-Zarqawi could make with such a statement?

Would anyone give me an over/under on the amount of time it would take one of the Wahabi Immams to issue a Fatwah upon anyone who said such a thing in their presence?

I'm not sure about a fatwah but there does seem to be enough qiyas (reasoning) regarding Secular Humanism:
Only by being subservient to his True God can Man be truly free. In other words, only by being a slave and servat to His Creator can he/she be free. If he/she rebels against his/her Creator, Who is Infinite, he/she becomes a slave of some finite god.

Through its arrogant assertion that human beings have full potential to achieve whatever they wish without the need of any help from God, secular humanism actually implies that human beings are gods. Islam stands on its own as a self-sufficient philosophy and world view without needing an extraneous philosophy. Besides it cannot be used as a frame for a world view that is not compatible with it either.

And Allah knows best.

And Allah knows best? Crap, if I ever get a chance to create a sitcom, that'll be the title for it.

Nacho confuses "Secularism" ("a view that religious considerations should be excluded from civil affairs or public education") with "Secular Humanism" ("an outlook or philosophy that advocates human rather than religious values.") While Europeans are far less religious than we are and while their governments are also more secular than ours and while they may even be coddling Islamists, none of that means that Europeans are Secular Humanists. SH is is a subset of Secularism -- you can have the latter without having the former. By conflating the two, Nacho sets up a straw man that he can easily knock down.

Bad analogy, bad definitions, bad reasoning --> bad plate o' food. Waiter! Send it back to the kitchen 'cause I ain't payin' for it. (Nor should you.)

I have work to do but I just couldn't pass this one up too:

Evangelical Christian leaders, who have been working closely with senior Republican lawmakers to place conservative judges in the federal courts, have also been exploring ways to punish sitting jurists and even entire courts viewed as hostile to their cause.

An audio recording obtained by the Los Angeles Times features two of the nation's most influential evangelical leaders, at a private conference with supporters, laying out strategies to rein in judges, such as stripping funding from their courts in an effort to hinder their work.

Another reason I'm glad I use a Mac...
Pressured by Evangelical Minister, Microsoft Withdraws Support for Civil Rights Bill

Irony of ironies. In the linked article, the religious pastor who got Microsoft to change its mind, demanded that MS fire two of its employees who testified in favor of the bill. According to the article, it was actually seriously considered by the executive in charge.

Now, I realize because I take it up the ass my judgment in all matters is suspect -- oh, and because I don't believe in Angry Sky Gods I have no moral reasoning ability whatsoever -- but isn't that what the bill was expressly designed to prevent?

Meanwhile, Spain moves one step closer to approving Gay Marriage.
