I went to school at James Madison University, which is "just over the mountain" from Blacksburg and Virginia Tech. We Dukes had a love/hate relationship with the Techies, but as VT had one of the few gay bars in the late 80s , as well as an out gay community in relation to the locked and bolted closets of most of JMUs attendees, things drifted more to the love side for gay kids. Many of us went to conferences, visited friends, and made pilgrimages to Blacksburg all throughout our college stay.
It's still a bit of a shock therefore to read about the horrible deaths at VT. Sad stuff. The sap who snapped and went on a rampage, inflicting his demons on others, has left a gaping wound in the State, one that will not soon heal.
My thoughts and sympathies to the victims and their families.
