Word
March 23, 2007

Speaking of my 20s, as a wee 20-year old, I used to go to Gay's The World book shop quite regularly. I was studying in London at the time, and I can remember reading about the store in a local gay rag, getting out my map, and just launching off down a street in the general direction of the shop.

I don't have the grandest sense of direction -- which became readily apparent years later while working as a social worker, trying to find the most obscure addresses in South Long Beach -- but I did have a mission. For whatever reason, I remember having to run a gauntlet of straight prostitutes to get to the place. I think I'd made a wrong turn somewhere....

I'm sure there is a small legion of fellow travelers who, over the years, also set out for that bookstore, and had many and varied adventures along the way. Gay's The Word is in danger of closing, a victim of the economic realities of the changing world.

I never thought we'd reach a day when the availability of gay material would be so prevalent and easily accessible that gay bookstores would close for lack of revenue. I'm glad for that newfound ease, but melancholy that those foot fueled adventures will, quite probably, soon be no more.

So sad we lost Warwicks the great indie store in La Jolla, its book stores all over they just cant compete with "online". Same with Tower and other record stores. Browsing the "homogenized" Best Buy is just not the same! We still have "A Different Light"on Adams Ave but how much longer is anyones guess.
