Tales of the 36 Year-Old Intern
February 18, 2006
I'm interning in New Series Development at LOGO, the larger of the two cable channels for gay audiences (Here! TV is the other.)
I wish I could tell you all the cool things going on there, but I was sworn to secrecy on pain of death, dismemberment, and everlasting torment by Yanni tunes if I blabbed.
Best Fact: LOGO is an awesome place full of awesome people (no lie.)
Disquieting Fact #1: All of my fellow interns are half my age.
Disquieting Fact #2: The guy I'm working for is 8 years younger.
Disquieting Realization: I have orgasms older than all of them. (No, not "put together." I know who out there thought that, and I will have my revenge.)
Argh.
Disquieting Thought But No Real Revelation: I'm so un-gay in comparison to everyone there. Even the straight nerdy guys in accounting on the other side of the building are gayer looking, sounding and acting than me.
Argh. Argh.
One of the nifty things about my internship though is that everything I've been learning about in class is actually pretty much right on the mark. (And it damn well should be, considering what I paid.) Further evidence that my UCLA education was well worth the money.
Awesome Realization to Close With: I'm part of history being made. Ten, fifteen years ago, an advertiser supported channel reaching 22 million gay, lesbian (and straight) Americans was a fantasy.
I remember many of us talking about it, but none of us really believing it would ever work. I'm part of it now, part of that history being made. My contribution is
stapling, filing, sorting, and moving boxes, but still, history is history.
And I'm here, for however long, lending a hand.
Life is cool.
p.s. They pass around funny MP3s like this.
