APA Backs Full Gay Adoption Rights
Adding its endorsement to other psychological and medical organizations, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) on Friday issued a statement backing the right of gay and lesbian couples to adopt."The APA supports initiatives which allow same-sex couples to adopt and co-parent children and supports all the associated legal rights, benefits, and responsibilities which arise from such initiatives," read a statement issued by the organization.
The new policy comes on the heels of a 2000 APA policy statement supporting the right of same-sex couples to have their unions legally recognized.
"Research over the past 30 years has consistently demonstrated that children raised by gay or lesbian parents exhibit the same level of emotional, cognitive, social and sexual functioning as children raised by heterosexual parents," the APA said....
