"Schoolmarm? Yeah, sure..."
July 11, 2002

Seems as though the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy has been busy, getting it's digs in against the Vast Left Wing Conspiracy.

Daniel J. Czitrom, a history professor at Mount Holyoke College, says ''right-wing political correctness'' is behind a decision not to consider using his textbook in Texas high schools because of references to prostitution in early Western towns.

With thanks to DazeReader.

No prostitutes in the Old West? So Miss Kitty was really just a businesswoman, after all?

I suppose if creation-science people can explain away dinosaurs, trilobites, and other awkward anomolies in the fossil record not covered by the Bible, their patriotically correct colleagues in frontier history can explain away ladies of the equally awkward evening. After all, the Hollywood Western, even at its most violent, is generally deemed to be a Good Wholesome Patriotic Genre of Family Entertainment. We can't have anything blemish a foundational mythic narrative, now, can we?

It's also interesting that there was a reason they were called "Cowboys." Most of them wouldn't even be allowed to drive in today's society.

The hookers or the cowboys?

SO: If the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy and the Vast Gay Conspiracy got together for a little friendly softball game...
