MMMM... Tasty!
July 22, 2002

Ah, eating crow. I prefer mine breaded and lightly fried. Bad for the arteries, but makes the whole thing taste better.

The article that I read off the Times site is poorly worded. As someone over at Atrios pointed out, the article is actually saying that there was a 10% change over the last decade, not a .1%.

So I have to eat a bit o' crow for the mistake and my rant.

But only half of the crow.

The implication that the change is attributable to abstinence only education, which appears to be one of the points of the article, isn't valid. Given the upswing in safer sex ed and the awareness of the AIDS crisis, those are much more likely reasons for the change. While it is possible that abstinence only education caused the numbers to decline from 1996 to present, it would need to show a sharp change in relation to the years of 1990 to 1995.

To date, there are no longitudinal studies that show abstinence education does anything other than make lawmakers get more votes. The one study that I quoted here a few months back showed that, if you hit kids around age 13 with AOE education, you can get them to delay for a year or two their sexual behavior. Even then that only works if abstinence isn't the "dominant" idea at the school where it is being tried. Once being abstinent from sexual intercourse becomes the "norm," then any benefit at all is lost. The real kicker is that those kids who were exposed to AOE education show a marked increase risk at engaging in unprotected sex than those who were received safer sex ed.

Lest I rant anymore, click on the "sex" and "young people" links off to the right. There is more information there on the subject.

They're also good on the grill...I usually baste them lightly with an olive oil and garlic infusion. I've been told that occasionally in the Catalonia region of Spain they add pieces to paella, but I discount this report because they'd been hitting the sangria pretty hard at the time.

I had to add some spicy sauce to mine. Worked well though.
